  • Charity Bank has committed £85,893,000 to charities and other socially driven organisations since its launch in 2002.
  • We invest 100% of our depositors’ money in supporting charities and communities, money that our depositors can then get back. 
  • We agreed £23,161,000 in loans in 2007.
  • Since 2002, at least 3,000,000 people across the UK have been supported by organisations we’ve worked with.
  • According to a survey of our borrowers, 74% of them say working with Charity Bank has helped them along the road to sustainability.
  • We had £13,242,000 worth of loans ‘in the pipeline’, as at 19th June 2009.
  • Since 2002 Charity Bank has unlocked £160,000,000 in additional funding for its borrowers, as a result of a Charity Bank loan.
  • The average loan size in 2009 was £159,000.
  • In 2008, the largest loan was £1,100,000, to an organisation called Harefield Parochial Charities.  This is the agglomeration of six ancient charities with common objectives "to benefit either the poor of the Ancient Parish of Harefield or poor persons resident therein".
  • The smallest loan in 2008 was £5,000 to Mereway Butterfly Centre, which is a pre-school that operates from a mobile classroom within the grounds of Abbey Primary School.  The playgroup serves the local community and surrounding areas.
  • 20% of the UK’s wealth - £794 billion - is owned by the top 1% of the UK population, compared to 50% of the population that shares just 7%.
  • One in five elderly people and 3.8 million children – one in three – are currently living in poverty in the UK.

About social capital and charity giving


  • By 2007, £3.27 billion of finance had been unlocked in the ‘global social capital’ market, from a £7.55 million standing start in 2001 (that’s an increase of over 400% over the last six years, according to Ashoka, the world’s largest network of social entrepreneurs).
  • Charitable donations stood at £8.9 billion in 2005/06 in the UK.
