ABOUT THE PROGRAMME
In the five years that Charity Bank has been providing affordable loan finance to enable smaller charitable organisations across the UK to grow, we’ve learnt that the best way to ensure the success of these loans – and thus safeguard the money of our depositors – is via the informal business support and guidance we give.

We help organisations work out where they are on the ‘staircase’ of development and as a result, we know from questioning our customers that:
  • 74 % of them have been helped along the road to sustainability, and

  • 40% have improved their financial management thanks to the input and guidance of the Charity Bank team

Now Charity Bank in the North is using the investment from Yorkshire Forward to formalise this support, as part of its new programme, From Carrier Bag to Toolbox, working with partners such as the Key Fund Yorkshire and international organisations such as the Nonprofit Enterprise and Self-sustainability Team (NESsT).

The programme aims to help creative and enterprising organisations adopt a more businesslike approach, become more outward-looking and develop and expand on good business ideas.

It’s the first time that an organisation has brought together support mechanisms, traditionally provided by support agencies, with a range of funding and finance options, under one roof.

The programme will offer a series of tools and different levels of intervention: from free access to online diagnostic tools and reference materials, and assessing readiness for development, to business planning, concept proofing and hands-on support.

We are moving away from our traditional offering of loan finance and a range of funding and finance options will also be available to organisations in Yorkshire and Humber, from seed corn and patient capital to equity and loans.
